Packing fragile glasses during a move creates considerable anxiety. The process requires sturdy boxes, bubble wrap, packing paper, tape, and marking supplies. Wrapping each glass individually, taking a bit more time than I’d like, really pays off. Success requires proper cushioning, filling gaps, and ensuring nothing shifts — even minor impacts can cause damage.
Gather Necessary Packing Supplies
Assemble materials before starting: various-sized cardboard boxes, bubble wrap, packing paper, soft towels, and strong tape. A marker helps label boxes as fragile. Pre-gathering supplies prevents interruptions and reduces stress during the packing process.
Prepare Glasses for Packing
Inspect each glass for existing cracks or chips by holding it to light. Clean thoroughly and dry completely to prevent moisture-related issues. Wrap each piece carefully, paying special attention to stems and thin areas. Newspaper should be avoided due to ink transfer concerns.
Use Proper Cushioning Materials
Bubble wrap is your main friend here. Those little air pockets really do absorb shocks. Use minimum two layers per glass. Foam pouches provide additional protection by preventing shifting. Fill all empty spaces with packing paper or towels.
Arrange Glasses in Packing Boxes
Layer cushioning on the box bottom. Position glasses upright, closely fitted together. Insert padding between individual glasses and top with additional cushioning before sealing.
Seal and Label Packed Boxes
Tape all seams securely with flat, secure flaps. Label boxes “fragile” on multiple sides and add handling instructions.
Handle Boxes With Care During Transport
Keep boxes on flat surfaces, avoid stacking excessively, and minimize sudden movements during transport. Unpack slowly and carefully upon arrival.
